Prayer for Intercession .The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in a small Portuguese village in 1917. What she said changed the world.
Millions of Catholics — and even non-believers — have turned to Our Lady of Fatima for peace, healing, and hope. Her message was simple. Pray the Rosary. Repent. Make sacrifices. And trust in the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Who Is Our Lady of Fatima?
Our Lady of Fatima is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary following her apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, between May and October 1917.
She appeared to three poor shepherd children — Lucia dos Santos (age 10), Francisco Marto (age 9), and Jacinta Marto (age 7) — at a place called the Cova da Iria.
Her Feast Day is May 13th — the date of the first apparition.
The Angel of Peace: What Happened Before the Apparitions (1916)?
A full year before Our Lady appeared, an Angel of Peace — believed by many to be the Archangel Michael — visited Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta three times in 1916.
He called himself the Angel of Portugal. He came to prepare the children spiritually.
In his first visit (Spring 1916), he taught them the Pardon Prayer:
“My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee.”
The Six Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima (1917)
The six apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917 brought powerful messages of repentance, prayer, and hope to the world.
These sacred encounters continue to inspire faith, calling believers to trust in divine mercy and spiritual renewal.

First Apparition — May 13, 1917
A flash of bright light appeared above a tree in the Cova da Iria. Within the light stood a beautiful Lady dressed in white, holding a Rosary.
She told the children she had come from Heaven. She asked them to return on the 13th of each month for six consecutive months.
Her first request was clear: pray the Rosary daily for world peace.
This is why she is also called Our Lady of the Rosary.
Second Apparition — June 13, 1917
During this visit, Our Lady made a heartbreaking prophecy. Francisco and Jacinta would go to Heaven soon. Lucia would remain on earth to spread devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
She also revealed a new prayer — the Decade Prayer — to be added after each decade of the Rosary:
“Oh My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of Thy mercy.”
Third Apparition — July 13, 1917 (The Three Secrets)
Around 5,000 people gathered on the hill that day — though only the children could see and speak with Our Lady.
Before performing any miracle, Our Lady spread her hands and showed the children a terrifying vision of Hell. Lucia later described it as a sea of fire where souls fell like burning embers.
Fourth Apparition — August 19, 1917
The children never made it to the Cova da Iria on August 13th. A local government official — hostile to the apparitions — had them jailed and threatened to boil them alive in oil if they did not reveal the Three Secrets.
The children refused. They would rather die than break their promise to Our Lady.
Our Lady appeared to them in a different location on August 19th, reaffirming her messages and asking them to continue praying and making sacrifices.
Fifth Apparition — September 13, 1917
Over 30,000 people gathered at the Cova da Iria. Witnesses reported seeing a miraculous shower of white petals falling from the sky — which dissolved before touching the ground.
Our Lady again urged the Rosary and prayer for peace.
Sixth and Final Apparition — October 13, 1917 (The Miracle of the Sun)
This is the most documented miracle in modern Catholic history.
70,000 people gathered in the pouring rain — believers and skeptics alike, including atheist journalists sent to debunk the story.
Then the sun returned to its place. And in a matter of seconds, every person’s soaking wet clothing was completely dry.
What Happened to the Three Children?
Francisco Marto died on April 4, 1919, at just 11 years old — a victim of the Spanish influenza epidemic.
Jacinta Marto died on February 20, 1920, at age 9 — also from illness. She had offered her suffering willingly as penance for sinners.
Sister Lucia dos Santos entered religious life, continued receiving visions, and wrote the famous Memoirs of Sister Lucia — the most detailed account of the Fatima apparitions. She lived until 2005, witnessing her cousins’ beatification in 2000.
